Three days after scoring big at the MTV Video Music Awards, Justin Timberlake was preparing for the release of The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2.
On Wednesday, the singer revealed a surprise show on Twitter at Hoboken, N.J.’s recently shuttered (and beloved) rock venue Maxwell’s later that evening — reopening the club for at least a few hours.
“Join me & @Target tonight for just one song. Let’s ‘Take Back the Night.’ First 150 get in. See you there!,” Timberlake wrote on Twitter, referencing the first single from the new album.

The one-off show at the intimate club, which can fit only a few hundred people, was for a Target commercial promoting the Sept. 30 release of Timberlake’s follow-up to The 20/20 Experience.
Timberlake’s tweet prompted thousands of fans to arrive at Maxwell’s hoping to take part in the ad shoot, reports The New Jersey Journal, with the majority being turned away. The shoot, a police officer told the newspaper, wrapped at roughly 9 p.m. Timberlake’s wife, Jessica Biel, was present.
Maxwell’s has counted R.E.M., the Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana as among the bands and acts who have played at the venue. It closed July 31 after more than three decades.
It has been a busy few days for Timberlake since the MTV VMAs, where he reunited with ‘N Sync for a brief medley. The official music video for his collaboration with Jay Z, “Holy Grail,” was released as he prepares for his solo world tour, which kicks off Oct. 31.
