Three rides at the Disneyland resort in Anaheim — Space Mountain, the Matterhorn and Soarin’ Over California — were closed on Saturday after the park received a safety citation, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Matterhorn opened on Sunday, the paper noted.
Disneyland media relations director Suzi Brown confirmed the voluntary closures to THR and noted that they were not based on guest safety. There is no current timetable for the reopening of Space Mountain and Soarin’ Over California and the two rides remain closed as of Monday.
California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health office in Santa Ana issued a citation to the park on Friday for seven violations stemming from the injury of an employee of a contractor on November 22 of last year that was performing maintenance on Space Mountain.
“We constantly strive to maintain a safe work environment for our cast members and contractors and we are reviewing certain protocols,” read a statement from Disneyland on the ride closures.
Citations included in the OSHA documents sent to Disneyland included violations of failing to properly mount fire extinguishers on Space Mountain and not providing guardrails on elevator work locations on the same ride.
The park was also cited for not correcting “the unsafe work practice of employees of both Disneyland Resort and [contractor] HSG, Inc. accessing the upper and lower exterior platforms of a building (Space Mountain) by means of unsafe ladderways,” the OSHA document read.
OSHA proposed $234,850 in total penalties relating to the violations, including three penalties of $70,000 apiece for citations classified as “Willful Serious.” Disney stated that it is “working with OSHA to fully review them.”
