Universal suffered a rare misfire in a year of hits when it released R.I.P.D. in July.
The film, which cost $130 million to produce, has made only $68.1 million so far and has a 14 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
But according to Jeff Bridges, who starred alongside Ryan Reynolds in the film about dead police officers fighting evil spirits, the movie that hit theaters wasn’t the same as the one he thought he had made.
“I had such a great time working on that movie,” Bridges tells GQ in its October cover story. “I remember what we were doing. I thought: This could be fun to see. And when I saw it, I was a little underwhelmed. For my mind, the studio made some, uh, choices that I wouldn’t have made.”

But Bridges isn’t too upset about the film’s lackluster box-office performance.
“It’s kind of fun when the movie’s coming out. It’s like having a horse in the race. And they’re lining up, and they’re off! And you’re rooting for your horse. And in this case, the jockey fell off the horse and you came in last. Ha ha ha. You know. That happens sometimes,” he adds.
Bridges’ Zen-like attitude and inability to get hung up on the small details features prominently in the profile, in which he takes the writer to breakfast at a small cafe in Encinitas, Calif., and along for a gig by his band, the Abiders.
Universal declined to comment on Bridges’ remarks to GQ.
