The Killing is nothing if not consistent. AMC’s crime drama wrapped its third season on Sunday night, and the two-hour finale fetched 1.5 million viewers.
Despite the series’ rocky history on the cable network — the Veena Sud series was canceled in 2012, only to be resurrected months later — its ratings have been remarkably steady for the last two seasons. Last night’s haul, the same number as the third season’s average viewership, actually marked a 100,000-viewer boost from last summer’s finale (1.4 million viewers).
It’s still a long way from the record 2.7 million viewers that first tuned in to the drama when it opened on April 3, 2011, but The Killing ends the season-that-almost-wasn’t in line with last summer. And steady as it may be, The Killing still ranks as the smallest of AMC’s scripted originals. The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels and Mad Men all see stronger numbers. No decision has been made on a fourth season.
The network’s latest scripted effort, Low Winter Sun, opens Aug. 11 after the return of Breaking Bad.
