MADRID – Pedro Almodovar‘s latest work, camp comedy I’m So Excited, won’t represent Spain in the run up to the foreign language Academy Award, as the Spanish Academy announced a four-title shortlist that skipped over the Oscar-winning director’s plane-based comedy.
Instead, Manuel Martin Cuenca‘s bizarre love story-thriller Cannibal, Daniel Sanchez-Arevalo‘s Family United, Gracia Querejeta‘s 15 Years Plus a Day and Santiago Zannou‘s Scorpion of Love will vie for the honor to take a shot at the title. Spain will announce which film will be its bid for an Oscar on Sept. 25, during the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Toronto artistic director Cameron Bailey included Cannibal, which screened on Friday at Toronto and is scheduled in the official lineup at San Sebastian, in his mission list of 15 films at the festival that can change the way people see the world.
Almodovar — whose absence from the Spanish shortlist wasn’t unusual in Spain, where he has complained of being snubbed in the past and where Spanish Academy members argue that they want to give others an international platform to succeed — did find his film listed as the EFA unveiled its list of contenders on Monday. I’m So Excited made the list of 46 films recommended for a nomination for the European Film Awards.
