Organizer of Asian Themed Costume Contest Confronted with Accusations of Racism

CATEGORIES

Asian Bar Crawl & Costume PartyThe organizers of an Asian themed costume contest scheduled for Sunday doesn’t understand why some are concerned the contest is racist, reports 10 News in San Diego.

The flyer publicizing the contest includes a restaurant named Bang Bang and the words “happy ending” directly underneath it.

“The event came off blatantly racist and sexist,” said Linda Le of the National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum.

“It typecasts us and stereotypes us to what we have for decades tried to move away from.  We are not just kung-fu fighters and or sexualized geishas,” Le said.

Sin Bosier is organizing the event.

Reporter Michael Chen of 10 News asked if he could see someone dressing up as a stereotypical Asian and offending others.

“Absolutely not,” said Bosier. Bosier says the “happy ending” slogan on the poster is Bang Bang’s slogan, double meaning and all.
