SACRAMENTO–

Chief Sergeant at Arms Tony Beard reflects on the shooting at our nation’s capital and its security design plan.

“It’s an unfortunate event, but the plan did what it was supposed to do in terms of its design, particularly the barriers and the fact that the car was ultimately stopped,” said Sergeant At Arms, Tony Beard.

Beard, who’s worked for security at the California State Capitol for 46 years, says he kept a close eye on what unfolded in Washington, for Sacramento’s Capitol is no stranger to similar incidents.

“It’s been a constant challenge. Frankly, there’s been a lot history in this building where security incidents have happened. From a murder in 1927 to an attempted presidential assassination of Gerald Ford in 1974, as well as other incidents such as  a truck being rammed into the side of a building,” said Beard.

The big rig milk truck crash caused 21 million dollars worth of damage and could have been worse. Beard explained, “So had he been driving gasoline we wouldn’t be in this building today we would having to build a new capitol building.”

To make the Sacramento’s capitol more secure, they built a new barrier system.

California’s Highway Patrol is responsible for providing security inside and outside of the building. No one seemed interested in talking about specific security tactics.

“Unfortunately there’s evil in the world and we have to think about that,” Beard said.

However, Beard is open to a new Twitter Alert System that got its first true test in D-C, Thursday.  It allows certain government offices to send push notifications to followers – warning of potential dangers.

“It’s a much bigger building in terms of sheer size and people in it. But uh, it maybe a technique we can use in the future,” said Beard.

Beard also said the capitol is a place for the people to craft legislation and it’s their job to make sure everyone can do that in a safe environment.
