If people weren’t planning to talk about digital comics at Comic-Con already (Spoiler: They were; there are multiple panels on the subject throughout the four days of programming), they’ll have even more reason to with today’s news that four publishers – Top Cow, IDW, Boom! Studios and newcomer ITV Studios America – have signed up with digital studio Madefire to create what’s being described as “a new standard for digital storytelling in the 21st century.”
Under the new partnerships, Madefire, which has been around since 2011 with an advisory board of comic creators including Bill Sienkiewicz and Watchmen‘s Dave Gibbons, will adapt select titles from each publisher – including IDW’s Star Trek, Transformers and My Little Pony series – into “Motion Books,” a format that adds limited animation to the reading experience, creating something that’s part traditional comic and part cartoon, similar to Marvel’s Infinite Comics and DC’s DC2 releases.

In the announcement of the partnerships, IDW’s VP of Digital Publishing Jeff Webber said that Madefire has “taken everything they’ve learned and developed over the past year and applied it to creating new experiences with some of our top comic brands. The motion book versions of Star Trek, My Little Pony and Transformers comics will reach a whole new audience.”
Samples of the new motion comics will be available to view at Comic-Con, although the teaser trailer that accompanied the announcement offers a hint of what’s to come.
