The Mercury News is reporting that legendary San Francisco artist Ruth Asawa died Monday night at the age of 87.

If you’ve been to Union Square and walked pass the Hyatt Hotel, you’ve likely seen her fountain (pictured left).

If you’ve noticed a mermaid at the Ghirdelli Square fountain, you’ve likely admired her work.

Her permanent collection is at the Oakland Museum of California, but that didn’t stop the de Young Museum in San Francisco from doing a retrospective of her work in 2006.

“Her personal history is inextricably linked to the story of California and her work is immediately recognizable for its grace and delicacy–even when monumental in scale,” said Oakland Museum director Lori Fogarty. “She will be deeply missed, not only for her enormous contribution to American sculpture, but for her commitment to education and civic life in the Bay Area.”
