LONDON – Irish filmmaker Jim Sheridan will head the Muhr Arab Feature Competition jury at the upcoming Dubai International Film Festival, organizers said Oct. 8.
Sheridan’s 1989 debut My Left Foot garnered Daniel Day-Lewis, co-star Brenda Fricker Oscars for their turns.
Sheridan followed up with In The Name of the Father which won the Golden Bear at the 44th Berlin International Film Festival and his resume also boasts The Boxer, In America, Get Rich or Die Tryin and Brothers.
Sheridan said: “The Middle East has a deep-rooted appreciation for the arts, and the Arab cinema industry continues to thrive, revealing hidden gems and previously untold stories. Productions from the Arab world have captivated audiences worldwide in recent years and I am delighted to be on the Muhr Arab Feature jury.”
Last year’s edition saw over 80 films compete for the Muhr Awards which carry a purse of over $575,000 across three categories – Muhr Emirati, Muhr Arab and Muhr AsiaAfrica.
Arabic features are also eligible for a variety of awards including the FIPRESCI International Prize of the Critics Award all of which will be announced at the awards ceremony Dec. 13, 2013.
DIFF artistic director Masoud Amralla Al Ali described Sheridan as “one of the most prolific filmmakers of the last two decades and responsible for some exceptional and critically acclaimed films that truly deserve the accolades bestowed upon them.”
The festival runs Dec. 6 through 14, 2013.
