Singer-songwriter Carole King will receive the 2013 Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at a White House concert, where she will perform along with James Taylor, Gloria Estefan, Billy Joel and others.

The East Room event, hosted May 22 by the president and first lady, is part of the ongoing In Performance at the White House Series and will be streamed live, along with Barack Obama’s remarks, at www.whitehouse.gov/live beginning at 7 p.m. EDT. King, an active supporter of Democratic candidates and environmental causes who recently performed a benefit for Massachusetts Senate candidate Ed Markey, is the first woman to receive the Gershwin. The concert program also will include performances by Jesse McCartney, Emeli Sandé and Trisha Yearwood.

The East Room ceremony will cap off two days of events for King, who will also be honored during an invitation-only ceremony at the Library of Congress’ Coolidge Auditorium on May 21. The festivities that night will include performances by King, Patti Austin, Colbie Caillat, Michael Feinstein, Siedah Garrett, Louise Goffin, Shelby Lynne, Gian Marco and Arturo Sandoval.
The Obamas have hosted White House concerts for a variety of popular performers during their tenure, including Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
