HONG KONG – Jagdish Raj, the Indian actor best known for playing police inspectors in Bollywood films, died on Sunday. He was 85.
Speaking to The Times of India, Raj’s son-in-law, Rakesh Malhotra, said the veteran actor had been “in and out of the hospital for the past two years and had respiratory problems. He passed away this morning [Sunday] due to respiratory arrest.”

Born in the town of Sargodha in what is now Pakistan, Raj — who was born Jagdish Raj Khurana — holds the Guinness World Record for being “the most typecast actor” thanks to his performances as a police inspector in 144 films. His daughter, Anita, is also an actress.
