The deadline for reserving interview space in the Job Register at the Atlanta annual meeting passed earlier this week, giving us our first opportunity to see how the annual meeting job market is shaping up. Early indications show that business looks good.

The AHA has set up 102 free tables for the purposes of interviewing (divided by drapes for privacy) in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Marquis Ballroom Salon II. This part of the Job Register – colloquially known as the “cattle pen” or “the labyrinth” (though I prefer “The Inferno”) – is the one job seekers are most familiar with. As of Wednesday’s deadline, interviewing institutions have reserved all 102 tables and a waiting list is forming.

The AHA has also reserved private rooms in the Marriott and the Westin for interviewing. As of Wednesday, we have partially or completely filled 36 out of 41 rooms. Unlike tables, there is a charge for private interview rooms ($80 for a half day or $140 for a full day), which is why most searches opt for tables.

Based on table and room reservations, the Job Register now has a record 185 searches being conducted at the annual meeting. This number typically doubles upon arrival on site, as searches being conducted in privately-arranged space are reported to the Job Register so job candidates know where to go. All in all, it looks like lots of job interviews will be taking place in Atlanta. Hopefully one is yours!
