LONDON – The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is adding a sixth nomination slot to the “outstanding British film” category of its movie awards.
The introduction of the sixth slot expands the British-only category, which celebrates the best of U.K. films.
Five of the nominations will be decided by an opt-in British chapter vote as usual. The sixth nomination will be decided by a jury of filmmakers, BAFTA said.
At the most recent British Academy Film Awards, Skyfall, starring Daniel Craig, won the 2013 award in the outstanding British film category.
BAFTA film committee chairman Nik Powell said: “We are in a unique position to shine a spotlight on the full spectrum of British filmmaking. By adding a sixth nomination we can ensure that this important category fully celebrates the outstanding range of British films in our cinemas each year.”
The film committee has also re-named and expanded the awards ceremony’s short film categories, so that the newly named “British short film” and “British short animation” awards are now open to non-fiction films.
The changes were announced as BAFTA published its full rule book for the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2014. The awards ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 16.
