Paul G. Allen, a co-founder of Microsoft, is lending his support to Robert Stone’s documentary Pandora’s Promise, which explores the idea that nuclear power can be used to combat climate change and provide energy to the developing world.
Vulcan Productions, Allen’s production company, is joining Jim and Susan Swartz and Impact Partners as a producing partner on the the film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
FILM REVIEW: Pandora’s Promise
Vulcan is providing campaign strategy and financial support as the film is released through distributor Abramorama, which will open the film June 12 in select cities nationwide. Allen and Vulcan president Jody Allen will serve as executive producers on the film, which will then play on CNN in the U.S. in November.
Stone’s films focuses on environmentalists and energy experts who have converted from being fiercely anti- to strongly pro-nuclear energy, risking their careers and reputations in the process. Stone exposes this controversy within the environmental movement through interviews with such figures as Stewart Brand, Richard Rhodes, Gwyneth Cravens, Mark Lynas and Michael Shellenberger.
“Pandora’s Promise presents nuclear power as a hopeful solution to climate change and is opening people’s minds about one of the most critical issues of our time,” Allen said. “This is exactly the type of thought-provoking project we are proud to partner on and support.”

Stone commented, “Vulcan Productions is an ideal partner because my film — at its very foundation — is rooted in the exploration of a new kind of environmentalism that embraces technology and science over ideological orthodoxy. Solutions for addressing climate change are going to require a robust commitment to the development and deployment of new energy technologies, and having the support of a leader such as Paul is simply invaluable.”
“We are thrilled to be working with Paul and Jody, and their terrific team of executives,” said Dan Cogan, executive director of Impact Partners. “They see climate change the same way we do — as an epoch-defining challenge that requires all hands on deck. As an expert in the way technology can change the face of the future, Paul is a great partner to have in making the case to the American people that advanced nuclear power is a solution hiding in plain sight.”
