The December issue of Perspectives is now available online. Read below for all of the highlights.

AHA President Barbara Weinstein’s inaugural presidential column in this past January’s Perspectives was titled “The AHA and Academic Freedom in the Age of Homeland Security.” Therefore, it seems fitting that her final presidential column, featured in this month’s issue, reexamines the topic with “The AHA and Academic Freedom in the Age of Homeland Security, Revisited.” Academic freedom is also the focus of one of the letters to the editor.

Catch up on some of the AHA’s recent activities, like the results of the 2007 AHA election, the proposed amended draft of the AHA constitution, and the new AHA initiative, “Sites of Encounters and Cultural Production.”

American Historical Review editor Robert A. Schneider contributes two articles this month. The first, “Across the World: The December 2007 Issue of the AHR is on Its Way,” gives an overview of the most recent AHR, while the briefer, “An AHR Forum on History in the Digital Age,” announces a upcoming forum to honor the late Roy Rosenzweig.

To stay up to date on government issues affecting the history profession, see Robert Townsend’s article, “Historians Get Rare Opportunity to Comment on Federal Policy on Oral History Projects,” and Lee White’s “News Briefs.”

Then, find out what all the shouting is about with James W. Cortada’s “Save the Books!” and Andrew Bell’s “Beat the Clock!” Though these articles cover different topics, they both embrace the same enthusiasm. Also check out Catherine M. Lewis’s detailed and informative article on “Building Successful Partnerships between Museums and Universities.”
