LONDON — The BBC said Saturday that Scottish tennis star Andy Murray‘s Wimbledon semifinal match was Britain’s most-watched TV moment of the year thus far.
It said a five-minute peak audience of 13.2 million people watched Murray’s four-set victory over Polish player Jerzy Janowicz. That amounted to a 54 percent share of the overall U.K. TV audience at the time.

BBC One’s Twitter feed said: “13.2 million people tuned in to see Andy #Murray’s semi-final victory last night, making it the most watched TV moment of the year so far.”
The figures topped the ratings for the season finale of Simon Cowell‘s Britain’s Got Talent last month. It drew an average 11.1 million viewers and peaked with an audience of 13.1 million.
Murray had also reached the Grand Slam tournament’s final last year, but he lost to Roger Federer. That has meant intensifying media coverage about the local hero’s chances of winning the Wimbledon trophy this Sunday.
A peak audience of 16.9 million people in the U.K. watched the final match last year, making for the highest British audience figure for any Wimbledon final in more than 20 years. The average audience for the 2012 final hit 11.4 million.
