GYDNIA, Poland — A Russian television movie channel has been sent an official warning for allegedly airing films that support same-sex relationships.
Russia’s federal media oversight body, Roskomnadzor, on Thursday warned popular movie channel EvroKino after it aired 2007 French musical Les Chansons d’Amour (Love Songs).
The agency said the film contains “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.”
It’s the first time a television channel has been warned against propagating same-sex relationships since the Kremlin introduced a controversial law earlier this year that making it illegal to publicize homosexual or bisexual relationships to minors.
Love Songs, directed by Christophe Honore, screened in competition in Cannes in 2007 and won on France’s top national award, the Cesar in 2008.
The Russian law has sparked controversy worldwide with fears that it could be used against openly homosexual atheletes during next year’s winter Olympics in Sochi.
