Lee Daniels will be honored with Outfest’s Visionary Award in recognition of his contribution to LGBT arts and media visibility at the 9th annual Legacy Awards, to be held Nov. 21 at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.
Outfest, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization, holds the annual Legacy Awards as a fundraiser to support the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project, the largest archive of LGBT moving images in the world with more than 30,000 pieces of material.

“Lee Daniels is an exceptional filmmaker whose work has had, and will continue to have, a tremendous impact on both the LGBT community and culture at large,” said Outfest executive director Kirsten Schaffer.
“I am extremely flattered and humbled to be receiving this year’s Visionary Award,” said the openly gay Daniels, whose most recent film is Lee Daniels’ The Butler. “Outfest is an extraordinary organization, and I cannot stress enough the importance of its mission. In both my professional and personal life, I constantly strive to represent and provide a voice for the LGBT community, and I am so honored that the Legacy Awards have selected me as this year’s recipient.”
Outfest and the UCLA Film & Television Archive partnered in 2005 to create the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project, which is currently celebrating its ninth anniversary.
The Legacy Awards are presented by Showtime and Merrill Lynch.
