Motorola Will Announce Its New Smartphone, The Moto X, On August 1

Motorola sent out invitations today for a press event on August 1 where it will announce its new flagship smartphone, the Moto X.

Motorola hasn't been shy about teasing the Moto X over the last few months. In fact, CEO Dennis Woodside basically preannounced the phone in May at AllThingsD's big tech conference. Google chairman Eric Schmidt was even spotted using the phone in public last week.

So far, we know the Moto X will let users customize their phones with different colors, backgrounds, and even laser engravings. It'll also reportedly be packed with sensors that can detect things like when you're driving in a car and let you open the camera app just by twisting the device.

Finally, the Moto X is the first Motorola phone designed under the direction of Google, which bought Motorola in 2011 for $12.5 billion. Since that time, Motorola has had to burn through its existing pipeline of Android phones before it could start making new ones under Google's leadership.

However, it looks like this won't be your typical smartphone launch event. Motorola is asking the press to sign up for separate briefing sessions instead of announcing the device on stage.
