NEW YORK — Craig Bierko will join the Broadway company of the Tony-winning Roald Dahl musical Matilda, stepping into the sensible shoes of tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull when original star Bertie Carvel departs the production at summer’s end.
Also joining the cast is Jill Paice as kindly schoolteacher Miss Honey. She replaces Lauren Ward, who exits the production along with Carvel on Sept. 1. Both those actors crossed the Atlantic from the original London cast. Bierko and Paice will begin performances Sept. 3.
Bierko received a Tony nomination as Harold Hill in the 2000 revival of The Music Man. His most recent Broadway appearance was in the 2009 production of Guys and Dolls. Paice’s Broadway credits include the musicals The Woman in White and Curtains.
Produced in New York by the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Dodgers, Matilda was nominated this year for 12 Tonys. It won four, including best book for playwright Dennis Kelly and best featured actor in a musical for Gabriel Ebert, as well as a special Tony honor for the four girls alternating in the title role.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, the show opened to rave reviews April 11 and has been playing to capacity houses at the Shubert Theatre. The production’s cumulative gross to date is north of $22.5 million.
