BUENOS AIRES – Mexican cinema was the big winner at the 17th Lima Film Fest closing ceremony, in which Amat Escalante’s Heli won best film and Diego Quemada-Diez’s debut The Golden Cage performed an award hat-trick with the jury prize for best opera prima and both the best cinematography and foreign press awards.
The jury – formed by Carlos Sorin, Damian Alcazar, Giovanna Pollarolo, Jose María Riba and Marcelo Gomes — gave the top award to Escalante’s third feature “for the filmmaker’s direct and straight look into a reality where violence is imposed on people who are left in a tragic situation with no end in sight.” Awarded last year in Cannes, Heli features a 12-year-old girl in love with a cadet who performs a desperate act in order to marry her.
The special jury prize went to Argentine film La Paz, by Santiago Loza, while Sebastian Lelio’s Gloria, the Chilean hit of the season, took away best director and best actress for Paulina Garcia, who won in Berlinale for the same role. Nestor Guzzini won best actor for So Much Water, a Mexico-Uruguay co-production.
