SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain – Mariana Rondon’s drama Bad Hair, set in Caracas, won the Golden Shell at the 61st San Sebastian International Film Festival Saturday by a unanimous jury decision.
Jury chairman Todd Haynes cited the Venezuelan-Peruvian and German production’s honest illustration of modern day cultural complexity and a young boy’s emerging identity guided by his single mother.

“I made this film to liberate myself from the angst of so much intolerance,” Rondon said. “Being different isn’t a problem. Just the opposite. It is beautiful.”
A Special Jury Prize went to Fernando Franco’s Wounded, about a woman’s quest for happiness. Marian Alvarez, who played the young woman with Borderline Personality Disorder, won the festival’s Silver Shell for Best Actress.
Fernando Eimbcke’s third film in San Sebastian, Club Sandwich, landed the Mexican the best Director Silver Shell and Jim Broadbent won the Silver Shell for Best Actor for his role in Roger Michell’s Le Week-end.
Pau Esteve Birba won the Cinematographer category for his work on Manuel Martin Cuenca’s Cannibal, while writers Antonin Baudry, Christophe Blain and Bertrand Tavernier landed the nod for best Screenplay for Tavernier’s Quai D’Orsay.
The coveted Kutxa New Directors, worth €50,000 to be shared between the director and the film’s Spanish distributor went to Benedikt Erlingsson’s Of Horses and Men, thanks to what the jury identified as a “challenging structure” handled with sensitivity and humor and offering “everything everybody expects of good cinema.”
“I’d like to thank those who helped finance the film that started just as the crisis was starting in Iceland,” Erlingsson said. “This prize will give wings to my film. So I hope it can fly around the world. So we’ll have horses with wings.”
