Lionsgate’s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, the latest from urban-film legend Tyler Perry, bowed at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, for the week ended July 14.
The cinematic adaptation of a stage play stars Vanessa L. Williams, Kim Kardashian and Perry regular Lance Gross and earned $52 million in U.S. theaters — about typical for a Perry movie.

Meanwhile, Universal Studios’ The Host debuted at No. 1 on Nielsen’s Blu-ray Disc sales chart for the same week. The sci-fi fantasy based on the novel from Stephenie Meyer, the author behind the Twilight series, earned $26.6 million at the domestic box office.
The Host, which generated 41 percent of its first-week sales from Blu-ray Disc, debuted at No. 3 on First Alert, right behind Universal’s Despicable Me, which had been No. 1 the prior week.
On the Blu-ray Disc chart, meanwhile, Temptation debuted at No. 4, even though just 14 percent of unit sales came from Blu-ray Disc.
Another new release from Lionsgate, Tyler Perry’s The Haves and Have Nots, debuted at No. 4 on First Alert. The comedy is part of the studio’s Tyler Perry: The Play Collection.
A third new release from Lionsgate, the crime drama Spring Breakers, debuted at No. 6 on First Alert and No. 5 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. Spring Breakers — in which a bevy of hot young starlets, including Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens, spend most of their time romping around in bikinis and getting arrested — earned $14.1 million in U.S. theaters.
Sony Pictures’ Dead Man Down, a crime thriller with Colin Farrell that earned only $10.9 million in theaters, debuted at No. 5 on First Alert and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
On Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Universal’s Identity Thief remained at No. 1 for the second consecutive week. Dead Man Down debuted at No. 2, while The Host entered the chart at No. 3.
Lionsgate’s Temptation and Spring Breakers debuted at No. 8 and No. 10, respectively.
