James Spader, it turns out, really did agree to take on the role of Ultron in Marvel’s 2015 project Avengers: Age of Ultron for the kids — both his own, and the kid that he used to be.
Describing himself as “not a planner” who likes “to try something different, to just see what happens,” Spader told The Independent newspaper in the U.K. that he accepted the role of Ultron not only because he expects that it’ll be fun, but also because Ultron and the Avengers happen to be “incredibly nostalgic” for the actor.

“When I was a kid,” he explained, “my best friend had trunks of comics and I didn’t have any, so I used to love going for sleepovers at his house.” It doesn’t hurt that his own kids are into the idea, as well. “I have three sons and two of them have a great interest in comics, so they’re excited I’m playing the role,” he added.
Mystery still surrounds exactly what kind of Ultron Spader will be — the sleek robot of the comics, or something that allows Spader to actually appear on camera during the movie? In another interview that appeared in the British press this weekend, he offered a hint toward the answer. “Just this weekend I went in for them to take very extensive photographs, head scans, body scans, and all kinds of things in preparation for figuring out how the hell I’m gonna fit in this Ultron character,” he explained to The Inquirer.
Body scans? Head scans? Does this mean we should expect to see a CGI Spader onscreen, or something else?
Avengers: Age of Ultron will be released in summer 2015.
