Colfax Art Walk on Friday, October 11

Colfax Art Walk attendance has grown with each month’s Art Walk, quadrupling over the course of the 2013 summer season, and it’s not over yet. The final event of the 2013 season, the Annual Fiber Artists and Multi-media Show, takes place on Friday, October 11, from 3 to 8 p.m.

The event showcases the professional creativity of four talented Foothill’s fiber artists with exhibits on display for the night of the Art Walk only at the Pop-Up Gallery, 14 No. Main St.

Each participating fiber artist employs a different technique in the creation of their art: Haley Parker, of Colfax, is a spinner, knitter, and alpaca rancher.

Parker plans to hold spinning demonstrations using sheared, raw wool as turned into fine yarn. Kids, especially, should enjoy seeing this live demonstration since spinning wool into yarn has become a lost art.

In addition, Parker will sell her hand-spun alpaca yarn, from the wool of her own animals, to all those who are yearning to make an alpaca garment. Buying local alpaca yarn supports the local economy.

Cindy Hintz, of Nevada City, displays her textile and wearable art using quilting techniques. Her eye for color, texture and design, as well as her masterful technique lend the air of a fine painting to each of her creations.

Hintz has traveled widely where she developed a love for Asian art and fabrics, evident in many of her fiber art themes. Her passion lies in creating fiber art in the form of exquisite tapestry wall hanging originals.

Laura Hamilton, of Auburn, exhibits her collection of Nuno felted and silk dyed creations. Nuno felting techniques bond loose fiber, usually wool, into a sheer fabric such as silk gauze, creating a lightweight felt. The fibers can completely cover the background fabric, or they may be used as a decorative design that allows the backing fabric to show.

Nuno felting often incorporates several layers of loose fibers combined to build up color, texture and/or design elements in the finished fabric. The Nuno felting process is particularly suitable for creating lightweight fabrics used to make clothing.

Kris Curl Johnston, of Colfax, and a member of the Colfax Art Walk Committee, displays knitted, felted and wearable art with a range of items from one-of-a-kind handmade handbags to garments and accessories to pictorial wall art. Johnston became enthralled by knitting and felting while traveling for her corporate job.

Since leaving the corporate world, she’s begun developing her crafts business and plans to expand into upscale galleries across Northern California.

The Fiber Arts Show is only one aspect of the multi-faceted October Colfax Art Walk as numerous other artists are displaying their collections throughout downtown. Pam Wilkinson, of Roseville, returns to the Greek Bistro with her collections of paintings. Local graphite artist and retired high school teacher, Steve Colverston, is at the Cider House.

Margot Comer shows up with her Western-themed oil paintings at Ammo Camo and Bait and photographer Lauren Williams returns to the Kitchen Garden.

During last year’s August Art Walk, the Doggie Depot proudly hosted Jennifer McCutcheon’s first showing of animal and pet paintings. McCutcheon is back for this Art Walk with a new collection on display at Main St. Pizza.

The Creative Corner [Artists’] Co-op features the works of a number of fiber artists including Bradley Duck, Bernice Lein, Kris Curl Johnston, Roxy Segan and Shirley Williams along with displays of other local artists.

New to Colfax Art Walk is the Pick-A-Flick Video and Gifts, located at 6 No. Main St. This shop features, for the October Art Walk, the “Body Royale” handcrafted, all natural soaps and body products of owner Cindy Cunningham who developed her line of 100 percent organic bath and body products after finding that commercial products exacerbated her allergies.

Just outside the door of the Pop Up Gallery on Main St., the highly popular Kids’ Art Improv drawing table is set up for future artists to draw and design to their heart’s content.
