The future of a Galaxy Far, Far Away just might include some familiar aliens, it seems. A new casting call released by Disney, Lucasfilm and Bad Robot has prompted widespread speculation that we’ll see some new Wookiees in Star Wars: Episode VII and beyond.
The Den of Geek website noticed that a casting call released via Spotlight, a British casting and auction service, asks for a male “7 ft to 7.3 ft tall with a slim/thin build and upright posture. Not too worked out or too ‘thick set’ especially in the shoulders. Broad facial features would be a bonus,” for a project officially called “UNTITLED STUDIO FEATURE” — although, for all we know, there’s another previously unknown co-production of Disney, Lucasfilm and Bad Robot that isn’t Star Wars out there.

The height of the actor is the main indicator for most that this is a casting call for a Wookiee — Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in earlier movies, is 7 feet 2 inches tall, and he also has broad facial features — but there’s no other sign that this is for a Wookiee role in particular; there are all manner of possibilities for very tall aliens out there in space, after all.
According to the casting call, the start of production is “early 2014.” Perhaps by the end of the year, we’ll have a better idea whether or not Chewbacca or, more likely*, some of his offspring will be appearing in the next Star Wars installment.
(*Spoiler for all those who didn’t already know, but in the spin-off Star Wars material, Chewbacca died in a 1999 novel, Vector Prime. Rest in Peace, you giant fictional fuzzball.)
