Proponents of a ban on one-use plastic bags say a bill will finally pass the legislature after the California Grocer’s Association agreed to endorse it.
Senator Alex Padilla says his bill phases in the ban which environmentalists have tried to get enacted for a decade.
Ronald Fong, President of the California Grocers Association, says retailers want certainty and don’t want to deal with the proliferation of different local bans now in effect in 70 cities with more on the way.
The plastic bag industry which employs 2,000 workers in the state says it will fight the bill. They say plastic bag littering is an overstated problem and that the facts will show that people not only recycle bags but reuse them at home to save money.
