BermanBraun is putting down roots at MGM.
The production company, founded by former broadcast chiefs Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun, has inked an exclusive multiyear deal with MGM. As part of the pact, BermanBraun, once based at NBC, will look to develop scripted and unscripted programming for both cable and broadcast. Also included is a first-look deal on all theatrical projects that BermanBraun is developing.
In a statement announcing the news Tuesday, the pair said that the production deal is “an exciting opportunity to collaborate with a team who embraces innovative concepts and new paradigms in this fast-shifting landscape.”
Added MGM CEO Gary Barber: “We are excited to be in business with BermanBraun, who are proven producers in the television industry and will be integral to our strategy of developing high-quality programming. Gail and Lloyd have made an indelible impact in the television and digital space by producing innovative content seen over multiple platforms.”
For MGM, the deal marks a continued push into small-screen programming. Over the past year, the company has been behind such efforts as History’s Vikings, MTV’s Teen Wolf and FX’s forthcoming miniseries Fargo, from Noah Hawley, Joel and Ethan Coen and former NBC honcho Warren Littlefield.
For its part, BermanBraun is responsible for a collection of TV projects, including NBC’s summer series Camp, Discovery’s MythBusters and Showtime’s Polyamory, and boasts a prolific digital division as well. Among the company’s popular properties: Wonderwall, GLO and Mom.me. On the feature film side, BermanBraun is developing a Ben Stiller comedy entitled Rentaghost at Fox and an adaptation of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus starring Reese Witherspoon at Lionsgate.
“BermanBraun are prolific creators who embrace the future of television,” said MGM TV President Roma Khanna, “and we look forward to working with them as we continue to grow our television businesses.”
