A writer named Rob Thomas — no relation to the Veronica Mars creator — is suing his former writing partner, John “Skip” Woods, for failing to pay him residuals for his work on a number of Hollywood blockbusters, including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The A-Team, A Good Day to Die Hard and Hitman.
According to the lawsuit, filed on Monday in L.A. Superior Court, Thomas is suing Woods, whom he claims to have collaborated with on the films without receiving credit, for withholding hundreds of thousands of dollars in commission. The filing states that Thomas “recently learned that Woods had lied to him for years about the millions of dollars in residuals” Woods received for screenplays partly written by him.
According to the complaint, Thomas quietly worked on rewrites for Woods’ scripts over several years — and was “given an office in a trailer on-set” to rewrite Live Free or Die Hard in 2006 — until the two men’s relationship soured in 2012.
Thomas is seeking $661,700 in compensatory damages, claiming causes of action for breach of oral partnership agreement, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, accounting, quantum meruit, unjust enrichment, declatory relief and constructive trust.
