Zach Braff is confronting critics of his plan to crowd fund his new movie, Wish I Was Here, and in doing so has nicked Morgan Freeman.
The 38-year-old star of Scrubs and Oz the Great and Powerful has been making the rounds lately, defending his Kickstarter campaign for a follow-up film to 2004’s Garden State — a fundraising drive which notched a staggering $2 million in donations from 28,000 fans.
Speaking to the makers of Kickstarted, a planned documentary about the “crowd-funding revolution,” in a 17-minute talking-head interview, Braff stressed the difference between himself and other stars who attempt to harness the power of the Internet to promote projects.
“The people who follow me on Facebook or Twitter or the people who like me on Reddit know that I engage the fans. I actually love engaging with my fan base,” Braff said. “They’re not idiots. It’s a conversation. It’s not me saying, ‘Hey, check out my new makeup line.'”
“People can smell bullshit a mile away,” Braff continued. “Look what happened when Morgan Freeman did that AMA on Reddit. There was a huge backlash because it was so clearly a film publicist writing answers for Morgan Freeman.”
Braff was referencing a Q&A session with the 75-year-old Oblivion star in which Freeman offered a series of one-line answers before signing off abruptly.
Readers grumbled that a Universal publicist was feeding the answers, but Reddit moderators insisted it was Freeman himself.
