Elk Grove High School's football field will be the site of this weekend's National Women's Premier Soccer League National Championship tournament.
Saturday's first game starts at 5 p.m. and pits the Houston Aces against the New England Mutiny. The second match starts at approximately 7:30 and will feature the San Deigo Sea Lions against the Gulf Coast Texans.
On Sunday the third place match will start at 5 p.m. and the championship game will begin at approximately 7:30.
All the matches will be held at the Elk Grove High School football stadium on Elk Grove-Florin Road in Elk Grove. Adult general admission is $10, children $5, parking is free and concessions will be available.
The event is being sponsored by the City of Elk Grove, Golden Eagle Refinery, Wells Fargo Bank and the Molten Soccer Balls. More information about the WPSL is available here.

Thanks for info EGN. This should be called "The Stealth Tournament"! Even though you list the City of Elk Grove as a sponsor, there's no mention of it on their city web site or at the last Council meeting. Didn't they just recently hire a $75,000/yr Event Coordinator? The Bee only lists the Strauss Festival and Pear festival, and Ol' Roy...nope, nada. Golden Eagle Refinery is also a sponsor??? Who??? I wonder if a certain local oil distributor wanting a freeway sign buys their oil? Oh well, maybe we're putting all pf our "balls" into the "medical mecca".
I would agree - I am a soccer fan and this is the first I heard of it.
Did anyone go? With the Strauss festival and Pear Festival, we did not make it to the soccer games although we would have loved to. What was the response?
Out of curiosity, I took my evening stroll last night to check the event out. From Elk Grove-Florin the stadium lights were visible but it looked like the stands were empty. Upon closer view, it seemed there might have been no more than 150 people in the stands. This was at about 8:15 so I am guessing this was the final game. For the final game of the season and presumably the "Super Bowl" event if you will for this league, not an impressive showing. I just hope the city didn't fork out to much money for the sponsorship of this event.
Strike one on the new Events Coordinator. He/she missed the ball completely on this one. No advertising, no mention the city website, no fliers posted around town, no ads in the local blogs and pathetic local attendance. Better get your act together.
Are we (taxpayers)really ready to spend our money on a multi-million dollar soccer facility when we can't get more than 100-150 locals to attend a Premier Leage National Championship Tournament?
Maybe we're moving a bit too fast here.
