The first trailer for the movie C.O.G., based on David Sedaris‘ life story as told through an adaptation of an essay from his 1997 collection Naked, has debuted.
In it, a fictionalized version of Sedaris (as played by Jonathan Groff) is shown working on an apple orchard in Oregon, to “get [his] hands dirty.”

Along the way, he gets involved with a “Child of God,” or “C.O.G.,” religious group, despite his earlier voiced skepticism about religion, telling a bus passenger, “I think religion is meant for people who aren’t smart enough to understand how the world really works.”
Groff’s David is also shown bonding with House of Cards‘ Corey Stoll, who plays a forklift driver at the apple plant, and arguing with his best friend Jennifer, played by Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario.
The movie, which is the first film adaptation of Sedaris’ work, hits VOD and theaters on September 20. It debuted at Sundance and is being distributed by Screen Media Films and Focus Features‘ Focus World division.
