Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s The Heat, a comedy actioner starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy as a pair of mismatched law-enforcement officers on a mission to take out a ruthless drug lord, was the best-selling disc the week ending Oct. 20, topping the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart its first week in stores.
Warner’s Pacific Rim, the latest creature movie from director Guillermo del Toro, had to settle for a second-place debut on First Alert, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined. Nielsen data shows the film, which earned $101.8 million in U.S. theaters, sold 78 percent as many copies as The Heat, with a domestic gross of $159.4 million.

On Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, however, Pacific Rim handily beat The Heat, with the latter selling just 70 percent as many copies as Pacific Rim. Not surprisingly, then, Pacific Rim generated 60 percent of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, compared to just 33 percent for The Heat.
The prior week’s top-selling disc, Warner’s The Hangover Part III, slipped to No. 4 its second week in stores, behind the Fox-distributed The Croods, still in high demand after three weeks in stores.
Walt Disney Studios’ The Little Mermaid, the top-selling Blu-ray Disc the previous week, inched down to No. 3 on the Blu-ray sales chart.
Rounding out the top five: The Little Mermaid on First Alert (down from No. 4) and, on the Blu-ray Disc chart, The Croods at No. 4 and Disney’s Iron Man 3 at No. 5, both unchanged from the prior week.
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, both Pacific Rim and The Heat are conspicuously absent due to their respective studios’ policy of holding back new releases from key rental outlets Netflix and Redbox for 28 days.
The two top rentals, then, are unchanged from the prior week: After Earth at No. 1 and This Is the End at No. 2. Both are Sony Pictures releases.
The No. 3 rental is the live comedy film Kevin Hart: Let Me Explain, from Lionsgate, which also debuted at No. 6 on the First Alert sales chart and No. 10 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
Rounding out the top five on the rental chart: Iron Man 3 at No. 4 and Paramount’s World War Z at No. 5, both down a notch from the previous week.
