LONDON — The first full-length animated feature produced entirely in Scotland, Sir Billi, voiced by Sir Sean Connery, will get a U.K. cinema release.
British independent Kaleidoscope Film Distribution will distribute the movie, the voice cast of which also includes Alan Cumming and Miriam Margolyes, about a skateboarding grandfather and veterinarian trying to save the last beaver in Scotland with the help of a goat named Gordon.
Kaleidoscope plans a limited release of the film on September 13 before it hits the DVD market a few days later.
Sascha Hartmann directed the movie from a screenplay written by his wife, Tessa Hartmann. Sir Billi was screened in the U.S. at the Sonoma International Film Festival in April 2012.
John Fraser produced the film, with Connery serving as executive producer, while Oscar-nominated Scottish composer Patrick Doyle (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) created the film’s score.
The soundtrack also features Dame Shirley Bassey, who sings the song Guardian of the Highlands.
Connery described the film, which took more than five years to make, as a “labor of love” for the filmmakers.
The producers have also inked distribution deals for South Korea (Line Tree), Australia and New Zealand (Vendetta Films), Turkey (Alparsian Yapim) and the Middle East (Front Row).
