Walt Disney Studios’ Monsters University remained on top of the national home video sales charts for the second consecutive week, holding on to the No. 1 spots on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, DVD and Blu-ray Disc combined, as well as Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
Two new Sony Pictures releases, however, posed a strong challenge: Grown Ups 2, which debuted at No 2. on First Alert and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, and White House Down, which bowed at No. 3 on First Alert and No. 2 on the Blu-ray Disc chart.
Both Sony Pictures releases also topped Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week ending Nov. 10, with Grown Ups 2 — a sequel to the 2010 comedy with Adam Sandler and Salma Hayek — snagging the No. 1 spot.

Grown Ups 2 earned $133.6 million in theaters, compared to the original’s $162 million. Sandler and his band of fellow comics, including Chris Rock, David Spade and Kevin James, are back. The story picks up three years after the original Grown Ups, with Sandler’s character moving back to his hometown so his family can grow up with his childhood friends.
White House Down was one of the summer’s theatrical underperformers, a fast-paced action thriller about a paramilitary takeover of the White House that only earned $73.1 in U.S. theaters — less than half the film’s estimated production budget of $150 million.
Both films sold well their first week in stores, with Grown Ups 2 moving 88 percent as many units as Monsters University its second week out and White House Down, 85.6 percent.
White House Down generated 41 percent of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, compared to 37 percent for Monsters University and just 31 percent for Grown Ups 2.
White House Down actually sold more copies on Blu-ray Disc than Monsters University, thanks to a twin-pack, with the movie 2012, that was sold exclusively at Walmart. But both editions were counted separately by Nielsen, so Monsters University remained in the No. 1 spot on the Blu-ray Disc chart.
Excitement about the upcoming theatrical release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug sent the DVD and Blu-ray Disc of the original fantasy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, back up the sales charts, aided by the Warner release of a new extended edition of the film, which also arrived in stores Nov. 5. Hobbit wound up at No. 4 on both sales charts for the week ending Nov. 10.
Rounding out the top five: on First Alert, the newly released Duck Dynasty: I’m Dreaming of a Redneck Christmas, from A&E Entertainment (and distributed by Lionsgate); on the Blu-ray Disc chart, Disney’s Little Mermaid, down slightly from No. 3 the previous week.
