Thomas Vinterberg‘s Festival de Cannes winner, The Hunt, starring Mads Mikkelsen is Denmark’s candidate to run in the nomination race for the best foreign language Oscar.
The Danish Oscar submitting committee on Thursday selected Zentropa and Vinterberg’s film for the foreign Oscar nomination race in 2014.
The movie tells the story of a man caught up in a frenzied witch-hunt after being accused of child abuse.

VInterberg’s drama beat Denmark’s other shortlisted candidates — Michael Noer‘s Northwest and Joshua Oppenheimer‘s The Act of Killing — to secure the country’s official pick.
“The Hunt has proven to be a film with great international potential,” says Henrik Bo Nielsen, who heads the committee and is CEO of the Danish Film Institute..
Added Nielsen: “The film enjoyed a successful world premiere at the Cannes festival in 2012 and has since fared tremendously well at festivals and among international critics.”
Vinterberg, who is currently shooting Far from the Madding Crowd in the U.K., penned The Hunt with Tobias Lindholm (TV’s Borgen).
A Zentropa film, The Hunt is produced by Sisse Graum Jorgensen and Morten Kaufmann.
Jorgensen was also behind Susanne Bier‘s Academy Award winner In a Better World and last year’s Danish Oscar entry, A Royal Affair, which secured a nomination in the Foreign Language category.
Since debuting at the Festival de Cannes in 2012, The Hunt has won a host of awards, including a European Film award, a British Independent Film nod and unspooled in the U.S. via Magnolia.
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 16 with the awards dished out on March 2, 2014.
