Sacramento’s Esquire IMAX Theatre was the scene of a Hollywood-style premiere of the movie “Supremacy” Wednesday night.
“Tonight’s a really good moment for us to just kind of take a step back and say, wow we can actually have a good crowd of people come and support something, and show that we really deserve to have more movies here,” said the film’s director, Deon Taylor, before the premiere.
“Supremacy” is a very intense true story, dealing with race relations.
“I saw the story and I knew this was a dramatic moment,” said screenwriter Eric J Adams. “This was a black family held hostage by a white supremacist and what touched me more than anything was the courage of this family.”
“We can take notes from this because love kind of cures all,” said actress Dawn Olivieri, one of the film’s stars.
She said the story involves “how you deal with that kind of violence, how you deal with that kind of hate, with that kind of ignorance…And by the end of the film there’s a really beautiful catharsis that occurs through Danny Glover’s character.”
Olivieri desribed working with director, Taylor as “nirvana” because he makes his actors feel safe and comfortable, bringing out their best.
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson attended the premiere, and is also a Deon Taylor fan.
“I’m really proud,” Johnson said. “You know Deon Taylor is home grown. He’s here from Sacramento. He could be anywhere in the country, especially down in L.A. But he wanted to have a world premiere here in the Capitol of California. We’re very proud to be able to support it.”
“Supremacy” opens in select cities including Sacramento on Jan. 30.
