Authorities say that a prison doctor at Mule Creek State Prison is recovering from an unprovoked attack that happened Monday morning.

According to a release from the California Department of Corrections, the woman was working on 61-year-old inmate Robert Daniel Perry just after 8 a.m. when he grabbed the woman by the hair and started choking her. She was able to activate a personal alarm during the struggle, sending other medical staff and guards in to help her.

Staff were eventually able to break Perry away from the woman. A correctional sergeant is said to have suffered a cut to his arm during the struggle, while another guard was exposed to blood.

Two razor blades and another unidentified weapon were later found in Perry’s cell.

The 65-year-old woman is said to be a 20-year veteran of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. She got away with only redness and bruising on her neck and she is recovering at home.

Perry is serving a 100-year sentence for making terrorist threats, stalking and attempted extortion – convictions handed down in 1998. A 50-year sentence was added to his time in 2006 for battery against a non-prisoner.
