TUOLUMNE COUNTY-
The U.S. Forest Service says the Rim Fire, burning in the Stanislaus National Forest, jumped from 16,000 acres to nearly 54,000 acres overnight.
About 2,500 structures are threatened by the flames. Two homes have already burned.
The fire had jumped containment lines Wednesday, briefly threatening the firefighters’ base camp.
The entire Pine Mountain Lake area was evacuated.
As of Thursday morning, the fire was only two percent contained, with a total of 1,356 firefighters battling it.
Steep, difficult and dangerous terrain has hindered firefighters’ efforts.
