We got worried there for a while. It actually looked like black’s moment — its very, very long 20-year moment — was coming to an end, and we’d have to burn our entire wardrobe. That’s how strong this summer of color-blocking was: It nearly knocked black on its back. However, we learned at the Golden Globes from various chic actresses that the “new black” is embellished, beaded, striped with white, or detailed with polka dots and sheer fabric.
Nicole Kidman‘s dramatic and statuesque Alexander McQueen black gown had a high neck, a lot of crystal beading smattered on the bib of the dress, then had a corseted waist of gold and nude fabric with black ribbing go through it. It basically had three sections, but managed to have flow and excitement while still being subtle. “I also love my shoes!” Kidman exclaimed to THR, kicking up her skirt to show us strappy gold Manolo Blahniks. Obviously, shooting the new film Grace of Monaco has had an effect on her — you could see it in her wavy Grace Kelly-like hair style.

Rachel Weisz told us that Louis Vuitton made her dress for her. “They made it and sent it to me, and they utterly embraced my style — understated but with detail.” The top part of the dress, and the hem — starting at above the knee — were both sheer, and the entire gown was black dots on black. The sheer parts really made the dress a standout: sirenesque, but still demure. It also had a tiny belt with a bow on it. Weisz also waved her hair and wore a very dark burgundy lipstick — looking like a 1940s siren.
Julianne Moore‘s Tom Ford architectural gown — remember, he directed her in A Single Man — had long sleeves, a very open back (a trend THR predicted in our Golden Globe issue), and slashes of white in the waist, down the side of the dress, and the entire back of the dress was white. Now that’s quite the detail. Of course, the biggest trend of spring 2013 is black and white — and Moore’s chignon and red lips did it proud.
