SACRAMENTO–

The City and County of Sacramento have both passed laws making it illegal for parents to allow their children into public waterways without a floatation device.

But, FOX40 learned Sunday that hardly anyone — children or adults — are wearing a life jacket out here along the Sacramento River.

In fact, if caught, parents could be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $500.

Life jackets are available on loan for free from five different city fire stations.
