LONDON – French director Claire Denis is to be honored with a lifetime achievement award for her work during this year’s Stockholm Film Festival.
The director will be presented with the Bronze Horse trophy and host an audience event following the premiere of her latest movie, Bastards.
The festival jury, which chose Denis for the honor, described Denis as a filmmaker who “refuses to close her eyes to the creative and destructive force unleashed by human weaknesses.”
According to the Stockholm organizers, Denis is a “bold explorer of postcolonial Africa and the dark corners of modern society, who invites the audience to an exposed universe that is beautiful and raw.”
Denis made her feature debut in 1988 with Chocolat and followed up with films including Nenette and Boni (1996), Beau Travail (1999), 35 Shots of Rum (2008) and White Material, among others.
The helmer will be the first female director ever to receive the Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award.
Denis’ latest movie, Bastards (Les Salauds), stars Vincent Lindon and Chiara Mastroianni and is billed as a revenge-themed film.
The Stockholm Lifetime Achievement Award is presented annually to honor and acknowledge a longstanding career and an outstanding achievement in cinema.
Previous honorees include Jean-Luc Godard, Quentin Tarantino, David Cronenberg, David Lynch and Oliver Stone.
The festival runs Nov. 6-17.
