Maggie Gyllenhaal will be back on a New York stage next spring when she stars in British playwright Penelope Skinner‘s The Village Bike.
An award winner for its premiere production at London’s Royal Court Theatre in 2011, the play concerns a pregnant woman craving the physical attentions of her preoccupied husband. She buys a second-hand bicycle and begins exploring the countryside around their family cottage, wrestling with her parallel desires for sexual fulfillment and marital stability.
Sam Gold will direct the MCC Theater production, which begins previews May 21, 2014, with official opening on June 9 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
While Gyllenhaal in recent seasons has appeared in Classic Stage Company productions of Anton Chekhov‘s Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters, this will be her first Off-Broadway credit in a contemporary play.
The actress will next be seen onscreen opposite Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx in Roland Emmerich‘s action thriller White House Down, opening June 28 for Sony.
Also on the MCC Theater season is Robert Askins‘ Hand to God, and, as previously announced, John Pollono‘s Small Engine Repair. The company also is teaming with Manhattan Theatre Club on the world-premiere Broadway production of Sharr White‘s The Snow Geese, starring Mary-Louise Parker.
Currently running for MCC is the world premiere of Neil LaBute‘s Reasons to Be Happy, starring Jenna Fischer, Leslie Bibb, Josh Hamilton and Fred Weller.
