TOKYO – Hitoshi Matsumoto’s latest film, R100, a sex comedy starring Nao Omori and Shinobu Terajima, will be released by Warner Bros. Japan on Oct. 5.
Matsumoto, a comedian and ubiquitous TV personality in Japan, wrote and directed R100 and will make an appearance in the film, described as “an intense sex comedy about a man who joins a mysterious club which opens the door to another world he has never before experienced.”
The R100 title is a play on the movie ratings R-15 and R-18 and represents the main character, played by Omori, breaking through boundaries. Filming wrapped last month, but further plot details and the production budget have not yet been announced.
Big Man Japan (Dai Nippon-jin), Matsumoto’s first foray into film, was selected for the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes in 2007 and is currently being remade in Hollywood by Neal H. Moritz via Original Film.
It was Matsumoto’s appearance at Cannes in 2007 that inspired Hiroshi Osaki, the CEO of his agency, Yoshimoto Kogyo, to launch the Okinawa International Movie Festival in 2009 on Japan’s southern tropical island.
Yoshimoto will send a representative to Cannes to promote R100, but with the film still in post-production, it won’t be offering it for sale at market, a spokesperson from the agency told The Hollywood Reporter.
