Camille DeMave, who worked as an assistant to such Hollywood notables as Paul Newman and Oscar-winning director George Roy Hill, has died. She was 84.
DeMave died July 5 of natural causes at her home in Macon, Ga., her family announced.
Survivors include her husband, Jack DeMave, who played Ranger Bob on Lassie for two seasons in the late 1960s. He also played Armond Lynton, a character who draws the interest of Rhoda Morgenstern (Valerie Harper), in a memorable story arc on The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Camille, a former model, and Jack were wed in September 1963. They were residents of Studio City for more than 45 years before moving to Macon late last year.
Camille DeMave was by Hill’s side during a run that saw him earn an Oscar nomination for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1970) and win the trophy for The Sting (1973). In Andrew Horton’s 1984 book The Films of George Roy Hill, she is described as a “core member” of the director’s team behind the camera. Also on that team: casting legend Marion Dougherty, Oscar-winning art director Henry Bumstead and Oscar-winning cinematographer Robert Surtees.
DeMave also served as an assistant to Gail Patrick and Cornwell Jackson, producers of TV’s Perry Mason; to producer Robert Arthur at Universal Studios; and to Newman, who starred in both The Sting and Butch Cassidy. She became good friends with the actor and his wife, actress Joanne Woodward.
DeMave also for a time ran the talent department at 20th Century Fox.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 8 at Carlyle Place, 5300 Zebulon Road, in Macon.
