Zooey Deschanel did it. So did Claire Danes. Jessica Alba wore a shade of it. You could say Jennifer Lawrence and Marion Cotillard are in it too. In a sea of black or white — or black and white — red orange, often referred to as poppy (the most fiery color around and one that seemed to have its moment last summer), was the standout color of the night. Rosario Dawson and Jessica Chastain both donned a very light shade of turquoise, and that was pretty much it for the color story.

Deschanel’s strapless ballgown silhouette was Oscar de la Renta pre-fall 2013, and while the color was very new, she’s worn this strapless-tight-waisted-big-skirted look before. A lot, actually. Explanation? “I refuse to wear a tight skirt to sit at the Globes all night,” Deschanel told THR on the red carpet. “If you wear a tight skirt all night, you can’t eat, you writhe around, and you definitely can’t go to the bathroom. I don’t want to be one of those people who have to ask somebody to help me go to the bathroom!”
Danes, who often wears black or white, really popped it out with her Versace halter fire-engine poppy dress — not what you’d predict a new mom to wear. “I just hope I don’t leak,” she confessed on the carpet — and she didn’t seem to be kidding.
It seems color trends are changing just like the weather — and just when poppy peaked, they pulled it back in.
