Bob Newhart will be honored at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, the Broadcast Television Journalists Association announced Monday.
The TV legend will receive the Television Icon Award at the third annual ceremony, held the evening of June 10 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The event will also be live-streamed at 8 p.m. PT on UStream. Parks and Recreation‘s Retta will host.
“Bob Newhart has entertained us for more than five decades, not only as a fixture on our TV screens, but as someone who has placed an indelible stamp on the entertainment business,” said Joey Berlin, president of BTJA. “He is truly a legend, and we’re thrilled that he will be the recipient of the 2013 Critics’ Choice Television Icon Award. His humor has endured and he continues to surprise us, which is no doubt why he is also a nominee this year for best guest performer in a comedy series in addition to being our Icon honoree.”
After years as a successful stand-up comedian, Newhart starred in sitcoms for two decades. He toplined The Bob Newhart Show, which aired from 1972 to 1978, followed by Newhart, which lasted from 1982 to 1990. He has made appearances on many other TV shows, including Murphy Brown, NCIS, Desperate Housewives, ER and The Big Bang Theory. Newhart’s film credits include Catch-22, Elf, Horrible Bosses, The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under.

Additionally, the honorees for the Most Exciting New Series category, judged from pilots and early episodes for shows premiering in the summer and fall, are FX’s The Bridge, Showtime’s Masters of Sex, ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., NBC’s The Michael J. Fox Show, Showtime’s Ray Donovan and CBS’ Under the Dome.
Four out of five shows honored last year in the category were renewed or will return for a second season, a far better percentage than in 2011. Only two (TNT’s Falling Skies and Fox’s New Girl) of those eight series are still running.
Presenters for this year’s awards show were also announced. They include Malin Akerman, Angela Bassett, Miranda Cosgrove, Hugh Dancy, Cat Deeley, Josh Gad, Johnny Galecki, Seth Green, Allison Janney, Tatiana Maslany, Maria Menounos, Elisabeth Moss, Kunal Nayyar, Jack Osbourne, Adam Pally, Sarah Paulson, Aubrey Plaza, Kevin Rahm, John Ratzenberger, Emmy Rossum, Jimmy Smits, Eric Stonestreet and Sam Trammell.
Highlights from the award show and footage from the red carpet will also air on ReelzChannel.
