SEOUL — South Korean thriller The Terror Live has sold 4 million tickets as of Tuesday, a particularly impressive box-office performance considering it opened the same weekend as local blockbuster Snowpiercer.
The 17th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) closer took only six days to sell 2 million tickets — reaping profits for the 6 billion-won ($5.38 million) project that required only 1.8 million admissions to break even.
“We expect the film to continue attracting moviegoers through the Independence Day long weekend, and the 5-million admissions mark does not seem far off,” distributor Lotte Entertainment said.
The Terror Live features a solo performance by actor Ha Jung-woo (The Berlin File), who plays the role of a new anchorman held hostage at the news desk by a terrorist while he reports on the latter bombing Seoul.
Meanwhile, Snowpiercer, the country’s most expensive film, directed by Bong Joon Ho, has brought in 6.7 million admissions so far.
The local box office has seen a string of homespun hits this year: Cold Eyes (5.5 million admissions and counting), Miracle in Cell No. 7 (12.8 million), The Berlin File (7.16 million) and Secretly, Greatly (6.95 million).
