CNN has renewed Morgan Spurlock‘s Inside Man for a second season, the network announced Monday. The series features Spurlock’s trademark experiential approach to issues-based documentaries. The first season of Inside Man, which bowed last spring, included examinations of migrant farm workers, union workers, gun owners, elder care and medical marijuana industries. The show has performed relatively well for CNN Sunday nights at 10 p.m. averaging 397,000 total viewers with 170,000 in the 25-54 demographic for gains of 25 percent and 42 percent, respectively, compared to the time slot average for the month prior.
The second season of eight one-hour installments, which will launch in spring 2014, will have Spurlock reporting on income disparity in the United States and embarking on a quest to live forever.
“Coming on the heels of a terrific first season, Morgan is ready to tackle even more provocative stories on CNN,” Jeff Zucker, president of CNN Worldwide said in a statement. “Inside Man is the perfect example of the type of program our audience is looking for when we aren’t covering the news of the day.”
The second-season pickup of Inside Man comes on the heels of a renewal for Anthony Bourdain‘s Parts Unknown, two series that Zucker points to when he talks about expanding the definition of news programming. Both shows received significant promotional investments from CNN. They also alternate in the Sunday-night time slot, though Bourdain’s program is more popular with viewers. Parts Unknown also recently garnered CNN its first Primetime Emmy Awards; the series won two including outstanding informational series.
